When Leicester won away

Revisiting historical away day victories against each of Leicester City’s 2024/25 Premier League opponents

  • 1899: Arsenal

The team formed in 1886 by workers at the Dial Square workshop in the Royal Arsenal armaments factory in Woolwich famously played south of the river - but when Leicester Fosse first made the trip to face Woolwich Arsenal nine years later, they didn’t have to cross the Thames.

  • 1901: Manchester United

In 1901, Leicester Fosse made the trip north to face Newton Heath with the Manchester club in dire financial trouble but we’re going to start begin 42 years earlier - and end 49 years later.

  • 1914: Fulham

When the Union FS party boat from Blackfriars to Putney arrived for Leicester City’s first away game of the 2024/25 season, it docked close to where another boat ended its journey hours before our first victory at Craven Cottage on Saturday 21st March 1914.

  • 1924: Crystal Palace

Selhurst Park may be a tough place to go, and a tough place to get to, but Crystal Palace has a rich history of contests and spectacles that have drawn visitors from far and wide.

  • 1952: Brentford

Try to find out what life was like in London in 1952 and your webpage is quickly clogged up with numerous references to something that sounds more like a cartoon villain than a real life event: the Great Smog.

  • 1962: Ipswich Town

Leicester City didn’t play Ipswich Town at all until Boxing Day 1961, when we travelled to Portman Road to face the team that would win the First Division title for the first and only time the following April.

So in the 1962/63 season, our first away win over Ipswich came against the reigning champions of England.

  • 1967: Southampton

When most Leicester City fans think of Southampton away, the number nine comes to mind.

But it was a number one who made his mark at The Dell in 1967, while a Saints striker made more than one mark after Leicester’s first visit back in the 19th century.

  • 1985: Newcastle United

Leicester City only won one of our first 26 away games at Newcastle. It was a special one - a 5-1 win in 1928 when the great Arthur Chandler scored four goals - but we’re going to focus on another comprehensive victory nearly sixty years later.
