Leicester City 1 Aston Villa 2: Restart game?
Have you played the new immersive version of FIFA? I've had a free trial for this season and it's pretty good, although riddled with bugs. I put my VR headset on and had a go last night.
Decided to play as Leicester against Aston Villa to keep it topical but I struggled a bit at times. Occasionally it doesn't feel very realistic. For example, it asked me before kickoff if I'd like to build a statue of club legend Jamie Vardy. Fine. Good idea. Accept. How was I to know the game would build it in the centre circle and make me play with ten playable characters?
Then, halfway through the first half, Aston Villa waltzed straight through the middle of the pitch and scored. I didn't even ask the defenders to play that high up against a striker with pace. Why would I? I mean, it'd never happen in real life. Someone would do something at some stage to make sure the ball didn't travel from back to front and into the net in the space of a few seconds, especially in such an important game. Thinking about it, that exact same thing happened the last time I played.
Anyway, I got back into it with a decent goal. All the previous times I've played since I bought the game last summer, I've been trying to get hold of the controls and just practised passing the ball slowly between the defenders.
Occasionally that approach has been completely calamitous and we've given the ball away in a horrible area and conceded - okay, more than a few times - so last night I decided to just whack it as far as I could down the wing and see what happened.
Bloody good tactic as it turned out. Managed to control it with Harvey Barnes, outpace Ashley Young and place a perfect finish into the far corner past Martinez. Even managed to get to half time without my usual trick of conceding again just before the whistle.
And the second half went pretty well to start with.
Then the usual bugs kicked in.
I wanted to make a sub but the game wouldn't let me until the 76th minute.
By then I had fewer players to actually take off. I swear if I didn't know better I'd think there was some kind of self-destruct mode that I've been accidentally switching on mid-game. This time for some reason, and I swear I didn't actually even press tackle, KDH went flying into a challenge when he was already on a yellow card and got sent off.
Okay, whatever. Settle back in and play for the point. I'd been watching my mate play as Everton against Tottenham the night before and he'd done a pretty good job of it. Even managed to thump one in from 30 yards with Michael bloody Keane. I mean yes, there's the realism issue again but it was entertaining to watch.
I really struggled to do the same though. Maybe I'd been pressing sprint too often before then. Everton must have some sort of secret power-up in the game that keeps them running until the end. My players seemed to have low energy bars and all I could do was drop to the edge of my own area.
Which, again, was going fine until another bug kicked in. I swear I was facing the right way when I played this pass as Wilfred Ndidi. But it can be a bit erratic using him to do simple things and I probably should have just whacked it as long as I could.
Maybe the previous Elite Manager Mode I finally switched off a couple of days before had stuck in the Ndidi character and made it try to do things that were a bad idea. Of course it goes straight to some bloke who hasn't scored in the Premier League in 681 days and he turns into prime Messi and curls it first time into the top corner.
Again, I’d question the realism.
I'd pretty much given up by this point but somehow managed to get a penalty right at the end. Of course that was overturned by VAR. I'm really starting to get fed up of this game. The same thing happens over and over.
Sometimes I have a little chuckle to myself - imagine if this was real life. Imagine if you spent hundreds of pounds on this, not to mention hours of your actual existence, just to relive the same horror week after week. Surely you'd just put down the controller and go for a walk or something.
My free trial runs out soon, but I'm thinking of having another go at the weekend. Might choose to play against Bournemouth. Surely would be able to win against them?
